Chapter 1 Extended Theme
The extended theme in this book is Love and family. Lily's mother died when Lily was four years old. Lily thinks that her mothers death is her fault and feels guilty. There is a quote in the book where Lily says that in heaven, when she meets her mother, she will spend 10,000 years telling her mother how sorry she is. She will also spend the next 4-5 centurys describing living with T. Ray. T. Ray is Lily's father, except she calls him T. Ray because he was never a father to her. He hates Lily and always yells at her and punishes her. Lily feels very alone and unloved, because she has no friends. The only person who cares for her is Rosaleen, her stand in mother who takes care of Lily and does the cooking and cleaning. Even though Rosaleen doesn't always show that she loves Lily, deep down she really cares.

November 4, 2008 Chapter 2 themes
One of the themes in this book is secrets. Everyone has a secret. Lily hides everything that goes on in her life from T. Ray. She also hides the reasons of why she killed her mother from herself. She does not like to admit the various reasons why it happened. Lily and Rosaleen both share a secret. They both must stay quiet about running away, escaping the jail hospital, and stealing the snuff from the town store.
T. Ray hides the truth from Lily. Whenever Lily asks about her mother and what happened, T. Ray either yells at her or ignores the question. All of the characters hold a secret that could be revealed later in the book.

One of the themes in this book is starting a new. Lily and Rosaleen go to Tibourn, and once they get there Lily changes her story and makes herself a new person. She tells the man at the general store she is there to see her grandmother, and when he asks her who her grandmother is, she looks at the can of Rose Snuff and tells him that she's visiting her grandma Rose. Luckily there was a Rose Campbell that lived in the town. Lilly also stole the Snuff from the general store and that is something she usually would not do. Lily has become a whole new person since no one knows who she really is. When starting a new, it's hard to keep your story straight, eventually Lilly reveals her real story.

One of the themes in this book is lies. Lily and all of the other characters lie in this book. Lily lies to the sisters about why she is there. Rosaleen lies to them about who she is and why she has a cut on her face. The sisters could also be lying about them not caring that Rosaleen and Lily are staying with them. Another lie would be T. Ray lying about Lily's mothers death. We dont know for sure but it seems as if he is hiding or lying about Deborah's death. Also at August, May and June's woods, behind their house, Lily found a wall. On this wall Lily found some scrunched up paper in the crevices of the wall. One of them readm, "Birmingham, Sept. 15, four little angels dead. Lily knew something had happned and I think it is maybe another secret or lie from August, May, and June. One of the themes in this novel is coping. Many characters deal with coping in this story. Lily overheard August and June talking about her, and how they weren't going to report Rosaleen and her yet. Lily is trying to cope with this and the mystery of what really happened to her mother. Another character who has to cope is May. May has been a lot different ever since her twin, April, shot herself. May felt the pain of April's death, and now takes everyone else's pain as her own. Her way of coping is the wailing wall. one of the themes in the novel love. Many of the characters deal with being loved or someone loving them. When June and Neil are sitting in the living room watching t.v, Neil cant stopped asking June why she wont marry him and why the cant be together. June always tells him she cant and she will never get married again, and thats the end of that, but Neil will just not give up. All three sisters have to deal with being in love and or almost getting married, but still ending up single. Love is a main theme in this book because June, May, August, and Zach all have so much love for Lily and Rosaleen. If there wasnt love Lily wouldnt not be able to find her way and be taken in my the sisters. Love brings everyone together no matter wht color, race, your are but they all have learned to see through that and come together as a family and support each other, and that is love in so many ways. One of the themes in this book is racism and segregation. All throughout the book you hear about how racism effects everyones lives. Lily assumes that all African Americans are like Rosaleen, uneducated and rude, but when she meets the Boatwright sisters Lily changes her assumptions. In Chapter 7 Zach Tayor tells Lily how he feels about her. He tells her that he likes her a lot, but would be killed for even looking at a girl like Lily. When Lily first meets Zach they talk about what they want to be when they grow up. Lily assumes that since Zach is good at football, that he would want to be a football player. Zach is offended because thats the only thing white people see African Americans being, good at sports. Throughout the entire book Lily hears about segregation and racism on the news and how it effects peoples lives. As you can see racism and segregation play an important role in The Secret Life of Bees.

One of the themes in this chapter is love. All throughout the book from chapter 7 and all the others Lily will be talking about Zach. About how much she loves him and how they do everything together. I think he will make Lily a better person and help her with her past and find out more about her mother. Zach and Lily are spending the day delivering honey to her selling places over town and picking up money from the previous month's sales. "Honey money" was what Zach called it. They are working on a lot of bees work . Lily and Zach are going to become really close and both love eachother very much.

One of the recurring themes in chapter nine was hope. Lily saw May leading a roach out of the kitchen using graham crackers and marshmallows and asked about her mother. May said that she had known Lily's mother, Deborah Fontanel. This gave Lily hope that August could give Lily information on her mother and her mother's past. In chapter nine Zach goes to jail. He was with his friends and one of his friends, Jackson, threw a bottle at a white man waiting for Jack Palance outside an auto parts store. When all of Zach's friends, including Zach, refused to tell who threw the bottle and so everyone except Lily who was there was taken to jail. There was a lot of grief over what happened to Zach, but everyone was hopeful that Zach would be released and there would be no charges against Zach.

One of the main themes in this chapter is loss. Zach has just been put in jail for standing up for his friends, and May found out. She went out to the wailing wall, and after twenty minutes, had not returned. August, June, Rosaleen, and Lily search for her in the river by the wall, and August finds her lying dead in the river with a stone atop her chest. Later, when police question Lily, they tell her not to stay at the pink house, and that soon they will check back to make sure that she had left. All of these components: the loss of Zach to jail, the loss of May, and the fact that Lily may have lost her home in Tiburon, make loss one of the key themes in this chapter. mms
Chapter 11 Theme 11/14/08
One of the main themes in this chapter is celebration. After May's death everyone was very sad and mournful, but when they were done mourning her death everyone came together to celebrate "Mary Day" which is about Mary's assumption and is also a special rememberance for our Lady of Chains. As August, June, Rosaleen, and Lily were making honey cakes for the big celebration Neil walked into the kitchen to ask June something important. Neil asked to go somewhere private, but since June is very stubborn she would not leave the kitchen. Neil asked June to mary him for the hundreth time and June finally said yes! They all were so happy to celebrate this joyous occasion, since June always rejects Neil's proposals. At the end of the Mary Day celebration, Lily and Zach were alone near the river, and they both promised each other they would be together someday. This shows that celebration is a main theme in this chapter and throughout the whole book. M.B.
Chapter 13 Theme 11-18-08**
One of the main themes in this chapter is sadness. Lily becomes very sad which turns into anger after learning about her mother from August. She takes her anger out on the honey jars in her room that night, as she smashes them on the wall. For awhile Lily is okay but then when August shows her the box with her mother's belongings in it she becomes sad once again. At first Lily does not want to see what is inside the box but then she does. After seeing the poem her mother had from August Lily became even sadder because she came to believe that her mother was the rose.
